3 Safety Tips For Playing Outside In The Summer

June 26, 2020 by Jarred

Although the summer is a great time to relax and unwind while enjoying some great outdoor weather, being outside can also bring with it the possibility for danger. So to help ensure that all of your summer days will end with peaceful sleep rather than a night spent in the hospital, here are three safety tips for playing outside in the summer.

Keep The Bugs At Bay

With the warm summer weather comes all the bugs that love taking advantage of the heat as well. While many of these bugs are generally harmless, even if they do look menacing, there are some bugs that can cause you some real illnesses or injuries if they bite or sting you.

To best keep all bugs away from you when you’re spending time outdoors, Colleen Oakley, a contributor to WebMD.com, recommends that you do everything in your power to make yourself unattractive to any creepy crawlies. Generally, bugs love things that smell like flowers or other strong scents. Because of this, it’s best to avoid wearing any perfume or scented lotion or other body products when you’ll be spending time outside. And if you are going to be outside, especially if it’s during a time of day when the bugs are out in force, make sure you use bug spray to help keep them at bay.

Know How To Keep Yourself Cool

The sun is one of the biggest dangers that people face in the summer. When not given the respect it deserves, the sun can burn your skin, suck the moisture out of your body, and cause you to overheat to the point of exhaustion.

To ensure that you don’t have any medical issues related to the sun this summer, it’s good to know how to keep yourself cool when you’ll be in the sun. Dr. Sara DuMond, a contributor to Parents.com, shares that, if you don’t have access to an air conditioned home or car to take a break from the sun, you should try to first cool off your armpits and groin area to help get your body temperature back to a safe level as quickly as possible.

Be Smart Around Water

If you have children, it’s important that you’re very careful when they’re around water this summer. Little kids can drown in just a small amount of water, so Katherine Lee, a contributor to Very Well Family, shares that they need your undivided attention when swimming.

As for adults, you should be very careful if you’re going to be drinking any alcohol when you’re near water. Try to make smart decisions beforehand to ensure that you’re going to stay safe the whole time.

To help you have a safe and enjoyable summer, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you protect yourself and others this summer.
