Preparing for any kind of renovation for your home is not easy. There’s plenty of planning and reviewing that goes into every stage of the operation. The same goes for redoing your garage.
While a garage for some is just a void of storage space with boxes stacked to the ceiling, others seek to turn it into a viable system that works for their daily lives or helps to provide an outlet for their interests. Regardless of what direction you want to take your garage, here’s some advice on getting yourself ready for renovation.
Assess The Framing Of Your Garage
It is important to have an understanding of the amount of square footage and space you have in your garage, but it is even more important to have an idea of the blocking and framing of the space.
Some garages may be missing studs or attachment points for the installation of drywall. It’s important to inspect the inside of corners where walls meet, and where they meet the ceiling.
From there, you can better assess how to pass any wiring through the space for your electrical needs, and where to create room for proper ventilation or even heating if you intend to turn the garage into a workspace or home office via renovation.
Clean House
As you clean out your current garage, be sure to evaluate what can be donated, sold, or placed elsewhere in your household. If you can limit how much of that stuff goes back in the garage, it just gives you more room in your new space.
Not to mention, selling off old clothes and unusable appliances just puts more money in your wallet that can be spent on new and improved tools, or girlfriend jeans, or even be put towards more long-term goals like saving up for a vacation or a new car.
Protect Your Garage Floor
The floor of your garage is probably an afterthought. Your car can be leaking fluid onto the concrete, or something may be spilling in from outside, and the garage floor takes the brunt of it.
As you begin your renovation process, consider garage floor tile for an easier cleanup, as well as garage floor containment mats. Containment mats use heavy-duty fabric with seams made of a closed-cell foam material that does not absorb moisture. This fabric mat adheres to all climates and is able to withstand tire traffic.
These seams are reinforced and thermal welded to provide durability and longevity. This allows for more room in the corners for water, mud, oil, snow or any other liquid drip to be captured. A simple mop up or sweep of the push broom gets the cleaning done in no time.
Consider Additions And Self-Interests
Before a garage renovation, consider the intention of the space and the better choice for extra features to make your garage work for you and your loved ones.
Specialty storage racks and garage cabinetry are the best to limit clutter. There are different sizes that can be established based on how much space you may need to keep your garage floor from the beginning to become the foundation for a stack of boxes all over again.
If your intention is to turn a garage space into, say, a home gym, then a garage door opener could be in your best interest for days when you want to open up the area to a cross breeze, or a quick close if weather comes in to take cover.
If you wish to make your garage an operation for working on your cars or helping out your friends with their vehicles, consider the functionality and the amount of space to house a car. Be sure to also invest in a sturdy and secure garage door to provide protection from the elements and keep those automobiles safe and sound.
