Ever-Increasing Demand for Anthracite Persists Despite China’s Import Cap

January 6, 2020 by Jarred

Sibanthracite Group is ranked first in the production and export of UHG anthracite throughout the world, and is the largest producer of metallurgical coal at the domestic level. Sibanthracite Group is one of the most dynamically developing coal companies in Russia. The coal production amounted to 6 million tonnes in 2014, and 24.1 million tonnes in 2018

A recent Montel News article reported that coal prices have fallen to a new two-month low. While this may indicate a bear market approaching, the decline in price is expected to be temporary. To understand the price dip, you need to look at the fuel market as a whole. Much of the recent media hype is related to coke coal. A cheap coal type primarily produced in Indonesia, which is currently experiencing an oversupply. Coal consumption has experienced a dramatic movement towards anthracite varieties for metallurgy. Not only is anthracite much more carbon-efficient, but it contains fewer impurities, lessening the overall ecological impact.

Russia is already expanding coal production and exportation access in anticipation of a busy decade ahead. Experts expect a substantial decline in the production of coke coal and a switch to more efficient coal varieties like anthracite. This speculation comes from an industry divestment in Indonesian mines and a focus on anthracite and metallurgical coal sources. Anthracite makes up just 1% of the global coal reserves, making it the most sought-after coal variety. Currently, Russia is the world’s primary producer of high-grade (HG) and ultra-high-grade (UHG) anthracite. Sibanthracite Group is Russia’s primary manufacturer of anthracite.

China, coal’s biggest consumer, announced at a Shanghai expo over the weekend that they would be capping foreign imports at 300 million tonnes this year. This announcement was not surprising. China has routinely capped foreign coal imports to limit competition for their local miners. This cap should not impact the global anthracite market, it remains stable.

When reading articles regarding any decline in coal imports, it is vital to remember that not all coal is created equal. There are separate markets for different coal varieties, and the landscaping is changing rapidly. Over the next decade, experts are anticipating a massive shift towards Russian exports, creating numerous market opportunities for companies like Sibanthracite Group.

Dmitry Bosov Sibanthracite Group is ranked first in the production and export of UHG anthracite throughout the world, and is the largest producer of metallurgical coal at the domestic level. Sibanthracite Group is one of the most dynamically developing coal companies in Russia. In 2018, it produced 24.1 million tonnes of coal and anthracite.
