5 Useful Landscaping Tips For The Upcoming Fall Season

September 16, 2019 by Jarred

Fall is not so far away, and it’s time to start making plans for your yard. Landscaping is an important element of the equity and appearance of your home, so it makes good sense to invest some time and money into making it look nice.

Fall presents its own unique set of challenges, as the weather will soon gain a chill. Once the leaves on your trees begin to fall, you’ll need to stay on top of your yard maintenance.

Fall is the perfect time for some planting as well, so get a feel for all your yard needs before the weather begins to shift. Here is a brief look at five useful landscaping tips for the upcoming Fall season.

Use mulch to protect your plants

Mulch is a great way to protect your young plants from the damage the cold weather could cause. You can also use mulch to protect your trees from damage during the shift in seasons.

Spread the mulch around your shrubs and trees about 2-3 inches deep. It’s a good idea to use some fertilizer on your lawn to keep the grass healthy until the freezing months are finished.

Work to remove dead plants

Prune your plants and shrubs now, and take the Fall months to remove any dead foliage around the property. Cut bad dead grasses and bushes, and clean up the hydrangeas. Leave the dead stalks on your hydrangeas to make way for new blossoms in the spring.

Watering in the Fall

You don’t need to water your yard as often in the fall and winter months of the year, but it’s vital that you do provide some water. You want to keep your watering routine moderate, and time the watering in the morning hours, so the water has time to really seap in before the sun gets warmer.

When winter hits, you’ll need to augment your watering plans further. Continue pulling any weeds that may appear, and in October, your lawn will effectively take some time off from growing.

Mow the yard one last time

When the lawn begins to slow its growth for the year, give it one last mowing for good measure. Cutting your grass down to 1.25 inches will give it a better chance at returning in all its luscious green glory. When fallen leaves are blown by the Autumn winds, your short grass won’t catch them all like a comb.

Add some outdoor lighting

Fall is an excellent time to enjoy your outdoor spaces, and adding some soft lighting to walkways or sitting areas will make the experience all the more enjoyable. You may also save someone a nasty fall walking around in the well-lit spaces you’ve created.
