Can You Hear Me Now? Why the Landline Phone Will Never Go Away

December 21, 2018 by Jarred

Even in today’s mobile-heavy world, nearly 42% of American households still had a working landline phone as of December 2017. That number has been shrinking for some time and will no doubt continue to dwindle as mobile devices take over our lives. However, the landline phone is still not dead in our opinion.

Sure, you can’t text or surf the web with these auditory dinosaurs. But there are actually a lot of reasons why you may want to hold onto your landline phone, and it’s not just for the nostalgia of untangling the cords (most landline phones are cordless anyway.) Here’s why the humble landline phone will never completely go away.

Calls Just Sound Better

Dropped calls are the most common complaint voiced by mobile phone customers. There’s nothing more annoying than being in the middle of a conversation only to suddenly find you’ve been talking to yourself for the past several seconds. Or how about trying to hear someone when they’re in their car or in an area that isn’t picking up the phone’s signals?

These annoyances are never a problem when using a landline phone. You get crystal clear, even volume at all times. Thanks to the wonders of cordless technology, you can take your phone with you to your favorite comfortable couch or even outside and still enjoy a conversation (provided the phone stays within the base’s range.)

This is a feature that mobile phones haven’t been able to match yet.

They’re Stronger and More Comfortable to Use

Has your mobile phone ever slipped out of your hand and onto the hard pavement or worse, in a pot of boiling water while you’re cooking? Then you know first-hand how delicate these devices are and how hard it can be to hold onto one.

Landline phones are a bit tougher and can usually take a drop to the floor without getting damaged. They’re also larger and more ergonomically comfortable to grip with your hand, so you never feel like you have slippery fingers when using one.

Perhaps best of all, they don’t really have the ability to accidentally butt dial your ex!

They’re Not As Confining As a Mobile Plan

Landlines are usually bundled with cable and WiFi, and this means they can be canceled easily. The cost of using them stays the same month to month, as there are no charges for texting, data usage, roaming, and other fees.

This isn’t the case with mobile phones. If you surpass your monthly limit for texting and other data usage, your bill can get slapped with some nasty additional costs.

Mobile phones also usually come with a contract which means you can’t upgrade your model or change your plan until the contract period is up. Landline phones are not so restrictive.

Thinking About Getting a Landline Phone?

Although these phones don’t come with as many fancy features as mobile devices do, they are still not without some bells and whistles. You’ll find built-in answering services, call waiting, the ability to block calls, and more as common features on landline phones.

They’re also cordless which means they’re easy to walk around with and use. Here are some of the best cordless phones of 2018 to check out.

Landline Phones Will Be With Us For a While Yet

We certainly believe the landline phone is not dead yet, and will still be valued and used by people who recognize its benefits. Sometimes there’s something to be said for technology that may seem outdated!
