How To Avoid Overspending On Funeral Arrangements

June 13, 2018 by Jarred

Having to deal with the loss of a loved one is no easy task and honouring the memory of their life is a way that helps us cope with our grief. While this is something that many of us have or will undoubtedly encounter, it doesn’t change the fact that making funeral arrangements can oftentimes entail substantial costs. Because of the nature of the service, we usually tend to forego logic and objectivity when making decisions too, which doesn’t help limit expenditure.

This isn’t necessarily a bad approach so long as the finances allocated for the services aren’t limited. However, the fact of the matter is that not many of us have the luxury of working with unlimited resources. More often than not, we find ourselves with little more than a modest budget. Fortunately, there are ways to get around overspending on funeral arrangements.

Try to do some research

One mistake many of us still make when acquiring funeral services is being too decisive. We’ll often choose the first thing that we see in order to speed up the process as fast as we can. This is an easy way to put a sizeable dent in the bank account, however. Instead, try to invest some time in doing research. The time that you spend on tracking down funeral directors that are in your budget or to compare funeral costs now will save you money later on.

Choose low-cost alternatives

We all want to give the best to those close to us and who have passed on, but it just isn’t practical or logical. It’s not hard to overspend on overdesigned urns and coffins, but the truth is that you don’t necessarily have to. The difference in the material used is minimal, and the inexpensive alternatives tend to be just as nice and durable as their higher-priced counterparts.

Consider opting for cremation

Not many are aware of the fact that cremation tends to be a much cheaper option than a burial. Most of the charges that you’re likely to incur come from the overall costs of both a cemetery plot as well as the casket. By going for a cremation instead, you’ll not only mitigate over expenditure on the funeral arrangements, but you’ll be given a lot more options for how to better honour the memory of a loved one who has passed.

Don’t overlook discounted packages

Funeral homes now usually offer discounted packages in order to stand out from what is essentially an oversaturated and competitive market. While some may scoff at the idea, getting discounted packages can be extremely important for those who don’t have a small fortune to spend on funeral services.

While any decision you make ultimately depends on how you wish to honour your loved one, it’s important to remain pragmatic and practical. At the end of the day, a funeral is more for those left behind rather than the recently deceased, and there’s no reason why you can’t make funeral arrangements at a cheaper price.
