Indoor vs Outdoor Saunas: Which is Better for Homeowners?

July 9, 2019 by Jarred

If you’re wondering whether or not investing in a sauna is right for you, stop wondering. The answer is yes, make the investment. There is never a reason not to purchase an in-home sauna. First of all, a sauna provides tons of health benefits that can’t be accessed any other way.

When you sweat profusely – as you do in a sauna – your body releases toxins and cleanses itself. Visiting the sauna is also a great way to tone the muscles, brighten the skin, and put an extra spring in your step. So the next question is what type of sauna to invest in.

There are several types to choose from depending on the heating style. Before heating style can even be determined, though, you need to weigh the pros and cons of indoor vs outdoor saunas.

Indoor Saunas for Homeowners

When you install an indoor sauna within the home, you have tons of shapes, sizes, and functioning features to choose from. There are four main classifications for indoor saunas, including traditional (steam), woodfired, electric, and infrared. Infrared is the newest, most innovative type of indoor sauna and is increasing in popularity among saunas users.

An indoor sauna has a few benefits over an outdoor one. The main one is that you won’t have to step outside of your home to use the sauna. Indoor in-home saunas are often located in the home’s basement, so you simply walk downstairs to get your daily sauna session in. Another perk is that an indoor sauna can often be installed by the homeowner – it does not require professional installation.

The last major advantage of an indoor vs outdoor sauna is that it just uses your home’s existing water and electrical systems. There are no additional costs needed to install a new water or electrical source for the sauna to run effectively. Because of this, the average cost of an indoor sauna is less than an outdoor sauna facility.

Outdoor Saunas for Homeowners

An alternative option is to install your sauna on your home’s property, like within the backyard. These saunas are larger than indoor ones, making them more ideal for a larger group of people or the entire family to enjoy. If you have a large family and all want to enjoy the sauna simultaneously, this could be the better option.

Another advantage of the outdoor sauna unit is the natural surroundings. When your sauna comes in a standalone structure outside of the home, you’ll get to enjoy the natural outdoor environment instead of just the confines of your basement. Of course, if you live in a metropolitan area and have no yard space, this probably isn’t an option.

So Which Type of Sauna is Better?

As you can see, it really depends on your specific needs and space available. If you want a larger sauna space, an indoor sauna room is your best bet since an outdoor sauna doesn’t often accommodate more than 4 people. However, if a small sauna space is fine with you and you would like a more natural environment, consider investing in an outdoor sauna instead.
