5 Things You Should Do When You Get Pulled Over

June 29, 2018 by Jarred

Getting pulled over by a traffic cop can be a nerve-wracking experience. However, if you know the right things to do, the encounter can be over with quickly. If you should receive a ticket, you can worry about contacting a traffic ticket lawyer later, but for right now, concentrate on making the traffic stop as safe as possible for both you and the officer.

  1. Keep Calm

Take a few deep breaths. It’s only natural to be nervous or upset when stopped by a traffic cop, but controlling your emotions and keeping a serene outer demeanor will help the encounter to go quickly and smoothly.

  1. Turn On Your Four-Way Flashers

This is especially important if you are in an area where it is unsafe to pull over and you need to drive a bit in order to find a suitable spot to do so. By turning on your flashers, you indicate to the officer that you are aware that he or she wants you to pull over and that you will comply as soon as possible.

  1. Once You Find a Safe Area, Pull Over Immediately

You shouldn’t try to delay the encounter by being overly picky about finding a spot to pull over, but it is also important to choose a spot that is well lit and away from passing traffic, for the officer’s safety as well as your own.

  1. Stay Inside the Vehicle With Your Hands on the Steering Wheel

Traffic stops are among the most unpredictable and potentially dangerous situations that an officer may encounter. Therefore, avoiding any action that might be interpreted as aggressive or threatening will help to defuse any tension.

  1. Don’t Be Argumentative

If you intend to fight the ticket, you can take the matter to traffic court. Now is neither the time nor place for that, however. Be polite and cooperative with the officer.

If you do receive a ticket, it is in your interest to seek out traffic ticket fixers who will represent you in court. In the moment, however, the most important thing is to prevent the encounter from escalating into a hazardous incident.
