Everyone is guilty of falling in the trap of interior design trends. A key item that you loved at the time can soon be found to look dated. This doesn’t mean that you have a bad style, it is something that will always happen as style isn’t eternal. The best thing as homeowners that we can do is to ditch the trends and decorate homes how we need or want them to look.
Find your personal style
Much like fashion, you have your own style preferences for interiors. Understanding this can help you decorate a home that won’t date badly, as the decor represents your personality. Developing the fundamentals of your own personal style and developing them is the key to determining your own style.
Ask yourself what colours you love? How would you define your personal taste? This is where mood boards can come in handy for summarising your style. It can also be as important to understand what you don’t like, this can help narrow down what you are shopping for.
Keep Your Paint Jobs Fresh
Sometimes it can be a simple lick of paint that can transform a room. It is also one of the cheapest updates you can apply to your home, and we believe it can make the biggest difference. You can look at updating your wall colours or sticking to the basics, it is definitely worth trying if you feel your space is starting to look dated.
Look for designs that have stood the test of time
Even with ever-changing interior design trends, there are some out there that have surpassed these and still remain stylish years later. For example, art deco, mid-century modern and Scandinavian interiors have been stylish for decades, the popularity may change but they don’t look dated.
Iconic designs over the years include Eames Lounge Chair from the American mid-century modern movement, Jacobsen Egg Chair from the Scandinavian functional movement and Van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair from the modern Bauhaus movement are all key pieces of furniture that have been featured in homes for the past 70 years. One of the reasons they are still considered stylish is for the fact they are all over films and TV production, with a reminder that these designs are used by the best stylists in the industries.
Avoid themes
Themed rooms can soon become dangerous territory, they look and feel dated a lot quicker than any other styling choice. We believe its become everything is too predictable, you need your environment to challenge your brain slightly to find it engaging. If you love a theme, then look at incorporating some pieces but mix it with other elements outside of that theme to keep it interesting and unique.
If you are wanting to add a theme consider the elements around that theme. For example, if you are looking to add a beach theme to your home you don’t necessarily need to use beach memorably, but a colour palette and textures like rattan. It might not be the beach theme that you are trying to achieve but the feeling of serenity and peace, something you may relate to being near the beach.
At the heart of any interior design project is that personal touch, which is where you make your home your own. One thing interior design experts always consider for their projects is who they are designing the space for, and that shouldn’t go a miss when you are decorating your own home.
